The Monster Energy Outbreak Tour 2012
The Madison Theater, Covington, KY
November 30, 2012.

The Outbreak Tour, sponsored by Monster Energy, had an awesome lineup in 2012.  Asking Alexandria, As I Lay Dying, and my new favorite band, Memphis May Fire, were big names on the bill, and they played a show at the tiny Madison Theater in Covington, KY.

Here’s some photos and thoughts on the show!!

Opener – Memphis May Fire

The MMF show was awesome.  Not that I’m biased or anything (lies), but I just really thought their set was great.  Objectively, a friend of mine said that he couldn’t hear the lyrics, which was hard for me to judge, because I know all the words to all their songs.  However,  I thought they sounded great and I thoroughly enjoyed this show.  For some reason the song structure and breakdowns that MMF writes resonate with me extremely well, and they are just such a fun band to listen to.  LOVED this show.

Matty Mullins – you are a stud.  And your name is Matty.  So, you’ve overcome a lot.

Great lyrics, positive, upbeat message, and totally focused on their fans.  Awesome band.

Lead In – As I Lay Dying

AILD is a band that I have really come to appreciate over the years.  I got hooked on a song called “An Ocean Between Us” about 5 years ago and have followed them closely ever since.  However, it’s only recently since I realized how unique AILD was in a genre that is completely smashed full of mediocre crap.

AILD have been touring and writing music for about 12 years now, and its just obvious that they are head and shoulders above most other metalcore bands I come across.  It’s obvious not only in their latest album (with the colossal song Cauterize leading the way), but it was also obvious in their show.  Kudos to AILD for impressing me again, even though I had seen them about 4 months prior to this.

Headliner – Asking Alexandria

As much as I like their music, I am not an Asking Alexandria supporter.  Maybe its because they are so young, or maybe it’s because they got so popular so quick, but they just come off to me as arrogant assholes.  (Interestingly enough, exactly opposite of the way I feel about MMF and AILD).  Every interview I’ve watched or read has featured them talking about how they love doing drugs and will go on benders for weeks at a time and perform without even knowing they got out of bed bed.  The most recent article referenced that they were the ‘hardest partying band on the planet’.  Cool, man.  I bet you drank like a thousand beers last night and banged 100 chicks in your cocaine induced party rage.  I’m all about having a good time.  I’m also all about being a grown up.

However, that being said, I can’t deny that I really do like their music.  In the past, their downfall has been their live vocals, as Danny has struggled to hit his complex clean harmonies live, but he sounded very good in this show.  (Could be that the band is getting better, or could be that the sound system was tweaked perfectly for his voice as the headliner of an indoor small venue).  Regardless, he sounded great and this show was as fun as I’ve seen them have.

I will also give them props for taking a step back and celebrating the life of Mitch Lurker.  He was the singer of Suicide Silence, and good friends with a lot of the bands on this tour, and he was killed in a motorcycle accident about a month before this show started.  RIP Mitch.  You had some killer screams.

I’ll also come out and say that hearing The Final Episode live is one of my favorite things in the world.  Not doing a very good job of “not supporting the band’, am I?

Until next time!  Cheers!
